Examining the Combined Use of Psychedelics and Psychiatric Drugs

August 30, 2024 DOI: 10.64239/pi-vl8204

Summary

SSRIs do not appear to block the subjective or therapeutic effects of psychedelics, but MDMA is entirely blocked by SSRIs and SNRIs. Ibogaine poses a risk of QT prolongation and should not be used with other drugs that have similar effects. Combining ayahuasca, which contains an MAOI, with antidepressants could lead to serotonin syndrome. Additionally, using lithium alongside psychedelics may increase the risk of seizures.

Study at a glance

Key finding MDMA is completely blocked by SSRIs and SNRIs.

Abstract

SSRIs may not block the subjective or therapeutic effects of psychedelics, but more research is needed. MDMA is completely blocked by SSRIs and SNRIs, while ibogaine has strong QT prolonging effects and should not be combined with other QT prolonging drugs. Ayahuasca contains an MAOI and may cause serotonin syndrome if combined with antidepressants. Lithium and psychedelics may increase seizure risk.
