Anthropology of Consciousness January 18, 2026 correction DOI: 10.1111/anoc.70030 via OpenAlex
Summary
The abstract corrects a previously stated estimate regarding the use of psychedelics in prehistory. It clarifies that while archaeological evidence is scarce, some suggest their use may date back to 9000–7000 BCE, based on cave paintings found in Algeria, rather than the initially mentioned 40,000 years ago.
Study at a glance

Abstract
Falcon, J. 2025. “Anthropology of Psychedelics.” Anthropology of Consciousness 36: e70002, 1-14 https://doi.org/10.1111/anoc.70002. In Paragraph 1 of the “Psilocybin” section, the sentence “Although it is difficult to find archaeological evidence of their use in prehistory, some estimate their use may date as far back as 40 000 years based on cave paintings found in Algeria (Froese et al. 2016),” was incorrect. This should have read 9000–7000 BCE. We apologize for the error.
