Summary

Esoteriology should be understood as a specific form of spiritual knowledge that addresses inner, transformative dimensions of human cognition, distinct from classical epistemological models based on objectivity and empirical verification. This knowledge is participatory, symbolic, and initiatory, requiring not just intellectual comprehension but transformation of the knowing subject. The article situates esoteriology within postsecular culture and the Metamodern paradigm, where it mediates between rational reflection, symbolic imagination, intuitive insight, and existential experience. Esoteriology is not marginal or irrational but a historically rooted, methodologically complex field engaging with limits and possibilities of human knowledge. It offers alternative modes of knowing that complement scientific and rational paradigms, especially in contexts of existential uncertainty and collective trauma.

Abstract

This article explores contemporary esoteriology through the prism of philosophical epistemology, arguing for its interpretation as a specific form of spiritual knowledge that addresses the inner, transformative dimensions of human cognition. In contrast to classical epistemological models grounded in objectivity, discursive rationality, and empirical verification, esoteriological knowledge is examined as participatory, symbolic, and initiatory in nature. It presupposes not only intellectual comprehension but also the transformation of the knowing subject, thereby reconfiguring the relationship between knowledge, experience, and being. The study situates esoteriology within the broader context of postsecular culture and the paradigm of Metamodern, characterized by oscillation between modern rationalism and postmodern skepticism. In this cultural condition, esoteriological discourse functions as a mediating epistemic framework that integrates rational reflection, symbolic imagination, intuitive insight, and existential experience. The article emphasizes that esoteriology should not be reduced to marginal or irrational belief systems, rather, it represents a historically rooted and methodologically complex field that engages with fundamental questions concerning the limits and possibilities of human knowledge.Special attention is given to the epistemological status of esoteric knowledge, understood as an inner form of cognition grounded in symbolic correspondences, spiritual imagination, and initiatory transformation. The article highlights the methodological duality inherent in esoteriological research, which combines critical scholarly distance with sensitivity to experiential and transpersonal dimensions. This dual position reveals the distinctive epistemic logic of esoteriology, wherein knowledge emerges through personal involvement, ethical self-work, and symbolic interpretation. The relevance of esoteriology is further analyzed in relation to contemporary socio-cultural crises, particularly in contexts of existential uncertainty, collective trauma, and the erosion of traditional meaning structures. In such conditions, esoteriological models of knowledge contribute to processes of sense-making, inner resilience, and spiritual self-understanding. The article argues that esoteriology performs important epistemological, anthropological, and ethical functions, offering alternative modes of knowing that complement scientific and rational paradigms rather than opposing them.In conclusion, the article proposes that esoteriology be recognized as a legitimate component of contemporary epistemological discourse. By conceptualizing knowledge as a transformative and participatory process, esoteriology expands the boundaries of philosophical epistemology and provides valuable theoretical resources for understanding spirituality, subjectivity, and meaning in the cultural horizon of the twenty-first century.
