Influence of early use of Cannabis sativa on the development of schizophrenia and psychoses: an integrative review

OBSERVATÓRIO DE LA ECONOMÍA LATINOAMERICANA June 30, 2025 Anderson Barbosa, Cláudio Kelvin Pedrosa Costa, Eva Tamires de Souza et al.

Early Cannabis sativa use, especially during adolescence, is linked to a higher likelihood of psychotic symptoms in adulthood, such as persecutory delusions and hallucinations, though these effects are usually temporary. The relationship involves genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors. Higher tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels in modern cannabis varieties add to the risk. This review of 12 studies from 2015–2025 calls for more robust research to clarify the mental health impacts of early use.
