Cannabis consumption and psychosis or schizophrenia development
International Journal of Social Psychiatry November 1, 2018 M. B. Ortiz-Medina, M. Perea, J. Torales et al.
Cannabis use doubles the risk of developing psychosis in vulnerable people, with the magnitude of risk linked to both the dose consumed and the age at first use. Gene-environment interactions further modulate this association. This review of 66 papers (23 cohort trials and 43 reviews) confirms a consistent relationship between cannabis consumption and increased psychosis risk in individuals without schizophrenia, though the exact mechanisms remain incompletely understood.
