Two Cases of Severe Amanita Muscaria Poisoning Including a Fatality.

Ingestion of Amanita muscaria mushrooms, which contain ibotenic acid and muscimol, can cause serious toxicity and even death, contrary to the traditional view that such ingestions are benign. Two cases illustrate this: a 44-year-old man died 9 days after ingesting 4 to 5 dried caps, and a 75-year-old man fully recovered after accidentally consuming one large cap. The neuroactive chemicals affect the brain, and certain high-risk features can predict more severe outcomes.
