Evaluation of Histopathologic Findings and Safety of Intravitreal Ketamine Administration on Vitreoretinal Tissue in Rat Model: A Pilot Study.

Intravitreal injection of ketamine at a dose of 0.01 mol/L in rats produced no visible damage to eye tissues. One month after injection, none of the five treated rats showed lens opacity, retinal layer necrosis or atrophy, or optic disc damage. No inflammation was observed in the vitreous, retinal layers, choroid, optic disc, or optic nerve. The same was true for the five control rats that received saline. The findings suggest that this specific dose of intravitreal ketamine is safe for intraocular structures in rats.
