Electrophysiological Chronometry of Graded Consciousness during the Attentional Blink.

Visual awareness during the attentional blink can occur in a graded rather than an all-or-none pattern. In an event-related potential study with 32 participants, subjective visibility ratings of face targets on a perceptual awareness scale revealed graded differences in the N1, N2, and P3 brain components across visibility levels. A classification task preceding the ratings tracked task performance. The findings suggest that conscious perception during the attentional blink is not strictly all-or-none but can vary in degree, supporting graded theories of visual consciousness.
