Gymnopilin-a substance produced by the hallucinogenic mushroom, Gymnopilus junonius-mobilizes intracellular Ca2+ in dorsal root ganglion cells

Gymnopilin, a compound from the hallucinogenic mushroom Gymnopilus junonius, increases intracellular calcium concentrations in both neurons and non-neuronal cells isolated from rat dorsal root ganglia. In non-neuronal cells, this calcium rise is blocked by inhibitors of intracellular calcium stores and phospholipase C, but not by removing extracellular calcium, indicating that gymnopilin activates phospholipase C to release calcium from internal stores. This is the first direct evidence that gymnopilin acts on mammalian nervous system cells.
