The ayahuasca tourism boom: An undervalued demand driver for jaguar body parts?

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is threatened by habitat loss, retaliatory killings, and poaching, and is listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List. A growing trade in jaguar body parts across Latin America, particularly in Brazil, Bolivia, Suriname, Costa Rica, and Peru, is documented. In Peru, investigations in Lima, Iquitos, and Pucallpa between 2016 and 2019 found jaguar parts sold openly in tourist markets, with prices ranging from USD 6 for a skin purse to USD 152 for a skin. Vendors offered to transport items internationally.
