Why should being alive matter for consciousness? Theories grounded in self-maintenance argue that conscious systems are distinguished by the need to remain viable in a changing world. What this requirement contributes, mechanistically, has remained unclear. A companion paper argued that self-reference alone is sufficient for something private to arise: a system whose present state recursively shapes its next state folds its history onto a single, internally privileged direction. Survival played no part in that result; the mechanism is substrate-neutral. This paper asks what happens when such folding is left to run. Using a minimal self-referential model, I show that self- reinforcement, on its own, drives the system toward an increasingly degenerate state. The entropy of its structure collapses toward zero: the system goes on changing, moment to moment, yet stops becoming anything new. I propose this collapse as a formal analogue of death — not the cessation of activity, but the loss of the capacity to become otherwise. A second channel, answerable only to the world arriving now and never to the direction already accumulated, prevents the collapse. What results is a stable regime held away from both extremes — neither frozen nor formless. Self- reference generates the private. Something like self-maintenance, it appears, is what keeps it from collapsing into its own repetition.
