Summary

AI-generated from the abstract

This essay develops the Non-Substantial Model, arguing that consciousness should not be understood as a property, capacity, or mechanism added to an already-formed world. It distinguishes reality, which should not be prematurely closed into a whole, from world, which is the appearing of reality as a legible whole. The text shows that whole, legibility, distinction, and consciousness cannot be arranged sequentially, with one concept first and the others derived from it. The conclusion introduces the concept of Nula, an empty designation for the limit where the attempt to find a first concept fails, rather than a hidden ground of reality or an explanation of consciousness.

Abstract

This essay develops the Non-Substantial Model in relation to consciousness, world, whole, and legibility. It does not begin from the assumption of an already-formed world to which consciousness would later be added as a property, capacity, or mechanism. Instead, it shows that the question of the beginning of consciousness is misleading if it already presupposes the world as a completed whole. The text introduces a distinction between reality and world. Reality designates what should not be prematurely closed as world, whole, set, or structure. World is a narrower concept: it is the name for the appearing of reality as a legible whole. Such an establishment, however, cannot be separated from legibility and consciousness. The essay therefore does not treat consciousness as a subject, as a property of the world, or as cosmic consciousness. Nor does it derive consciousness from life, performance, thinking, reaction, or self-consciousness. It shows that whole, legibility, distinction, and consciousness cannot be arranged into a sequence in which one concept would be first and the others derived from it. The conclusion returns to the concept of Nula. Nula does not explain consciousness and does not designate a hidden ground of reality. It is an empty designation for the limit at which the attempt to find a first concept fails.
