Energy and Soul from a Scientific Perspective: A Philo-Physical Analysis

The argument that the human soul survives death because energy cannot be destroyed is based on a misunderstanding of physics. The human body is an open thermodynamic system that stops exchanging energy at death, so its internal order collapses. Physical energy always has measurable properties such as mass, wavelength, and frequency, whereas the soul is defined as non-physical, making the comparison invalid. Consciousness is an emergent electrochemical process of the brain that ceases when the brain stops functioning. Personal identity and consciousness dissipate at death, and the soul as a physical entity does not exist.

Abstract

This paper examines and refutes the common pseudo-scientific argument that equates the metaphysical concept of the "soul" with the physical law of conservation of energy. Frequently deployed by theological apologists and academic professionals outside the field of physics, this argument posits that since energy cannot be destroyed, the conscious human soul must survive biological death by dispersing into the universe. Utilizing the strict frameworks of relativistic mechanics, classical thermodynamics, and modern neurobiology, this study demonstrates that such claims rely on a fundamental misunderstanding of physical laws. First, the human body is analyzed as a thermodynamic open system rather than an isolated system, where internal order is maintained solely by ongoing metabolic energy exchange that succumbs to entropy immediately upon death. Second, using the principles of special relativity and wave mechanics, we demonstrate that physical energy is inextricably bound to measurable parameters such as rest mass, the Lorentz velocity factor, wavelength, and frequency. Crucially, while the soul is considered non-physical and possesses no physical properties, any form of physical energy inherently possesses these wave attributes, rendering the conflation empirically invalid. Finally, drawing from modern neuroscience, this paper argues that consciousness is an emergent electrochemical process of the brain—a dynamic software that ceases to exist when its biological hardware loses power. The dissertation concludes that while physical energy is conserved at a universal scale, personal identity and consciousness are completely dissipated upon biological death, rendering the individual soul a physical non-entity.
