Abstract

In a lucid dream one is aware that one is dreaming. However, the degree of awareness andcontrol someone typically possesses in their lucid dreams, summarized as an individual’s luciddreaming skills, varies. Previous research has identified both the frequency of lucid dreamsand age as predictors. In this study, we explored the relationship between lucid dreaming skillsand age, dream recall, nightmare frequency, lucid dreaming knowledge, sleep quality, meta-awareness, self-efficacy, induction technique use, dream journal use, and beliefs related tolucid dreaming, using data from 344 participants recruited primarily from online lucid dream-ing communities. Multiple regression analysis revealed lucid dreaming frequency and luciddreaming knowledge as significant predictors. Meta-awareness was also indicated to be another predictor, but did not remain significant after adjusting for multiple comparisons.Additionally, we obtained estimates for the prevalence of sleep paralysis and false awakenings from lucid dreams, investigated the connection of sleep paralysis with lucid dreamingfrequency and induction technique use, and examined the four largest lucid dreaming communities in our sample in terms of community differences as well as most used techniques.Results revealed a small correlation between sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming frequency, butno significant relationship of sleep paralysis with induction techniques. Community differenceswere noted in terms of age, dream recall, induction technique use, and lucid dreaming relatedbeliefs. The most widely used techniques were found to be WBTB, MILD and WILD.
