Summary
Emerging research reveals that suicidal thoughts and behaviors follow distinct biological patterns, independent of specific mental health diagnoses. Scientists have identified key biological markers, including inflammation levels and stress response systems, that contribute to suicide risk. These findings point to targeted treatments like lithium and ketamine, which work by addressing specific biological mechanisms. Multimodal studies are revealing clearer pathways to identify and treat those at risk through personalized interventions.
Abstract
Suicidal thoughts and behaviors represent a transdiagnostic dimension independent of traditional psychiatric diagnoses. This specificity is supported by genetic studies, biomarkers, and preclinical research on endophenotypes associated with suicidal behaviors, such as impulsivity, anhedonia, and hopelessness. Clear mechanisms involving inflammation, the stress response, the serotonergic system, and neuroplasticity are emerging. Specific treatments, such as lithium and ketamine, target these mechanisms. The French Minds cohort of the PEPR PROPSY will identify the biological signatures and trajectories of this dimension using comprehensive multimodal approaches.
