Summary

The paper examines spirit possession rituals in Morocco, arguing that attendees' varied bodily reactions during these events reflect a broader societal appreciation of the ritual and its music. It suggests that possession is attributed to jinn, with individuals having two options for relief: seeking help from religious figures or participating in specific Sufi or Gnawa rituals. This perspective challenges reductive interpretations of possession as merely a cultural or psychological phenomenon.
