Psilocybin and Death Anxiety: A Dual-Mechanism Approach to Existential Distress
August 1, 2025 Annabelle Swain
Psilocybin, the active compound in 'magic mushrooms,' can help people deal with death anxiety—the deep fear of dying or losing control that appears in many mental health struggles. Unlike traditional treatments such as SSRIs and talk therapy, which do not always address the root of the problem, psilocybin changes brain activity, especially in networks tied to repetitive, self-focused thinking, and creates powerful emotional experiences that help people rethink their views on life and death. One or two sessions of psilocybin-assisted therapy can lead to long-lasting anxiety relief, particularly for people facing terminal illnesses. The therapy may also help people without a diagnosis who struggle with existential fear, offering more than symptom relief by helping them reconnect with themselves and find meaning.
