Integrating neural organoids and AI: increasing the risk of artificial consciousness or medical malpractice?

Front Mol Neurosci March 4, 2026 Alexander R. Harris, Patrick McGivern, Kyle C. A. Wedgwood et al. 1 citation

Integrating neural organoids with AI models creates AI-NO systems that hold promise for biological research and clinical decisions. However, public and scholarly discussion often fixates on speculative concerns about consciousness and moral status, overshadowing more immediate ethical issues. This article argues for focusing on empirically grounded ethical problems: using AI-generated data to plan research or discover drugs on organoids, analyzing organoid data with AI, and using AI to control interventions on organoids in open- or closed-loop configurations. It also examines how AI-NO systems might affect clinical decision-making, urging attention to practical governance and ethical challenges rather than distant hypotheticals.
