Qualitative analysis of a patient's experience of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for substance use disorder: Empirical synergies with twelve-step programs

Psychiatry Research Case Reports March 24, 2025 Dan Petrovitch, Jacob Spinks, H.J. Yoo et al. 3 citations

A 28-year-old woman treated for alcohol and opioid use disorder underwent a collaborative treatment plan combining ketamine-assisted psychotherapy with psychosocial and 12-step-based treatments. Qualitative analysis of her lived experience indicated that ketamine played an important role in her self-reported recovery, as she attributed psychological and spiritual changes to the treatments. Her ketamine-induced experiences overlapped with the 12 steps, particularly in recognizing the seriousness of her substance use disorder, committing to change, developing spirituality, and repairing interpersonal relationships. These points of overlap could be useful for clinicians treating 12-step-involved patients with ketamine.

Case report: Medical student types journals during ketamine infusions for suicidal ideation, treatment-resistant depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

Frontiers in psychiatry January 1, 2022 Joshua Willms, Ben McCauley, Lindsay Kerr et al.

A 30-year-old medical student with treatment-resistant depression, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, and 5 years of daily suicidal ideation, who had not responded to therapy, lifestyle changes, or six antidepressants, achieved remission from suicidality and PTSD within 1 month and from depression and anxiety within 7 months after an 8-month regimen of IV ketamine infusions and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score dropped from 25 (severe depression) to 1 (not depressed). These results suggest ketamine and KAP may be effective for mental health conditions in healthcare professionals. The patient also typed real-time narrative journals during four ketamine infusions, providing first-person accounts of ketamine-induced non-ordinary states.

Qualitative analysis of a patient’s experience of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for substance use disorder: Empirical synergies with twelve-step programs.

Dan Petrovitch, Jacob Spinks, Hannah B Yoo et al. preprint

A 28-year-old woman with alcohol and prescription opioid misuse underwent a collaborative treatment plan that combined ketamine-assisted psychotherapy with existing psychosocial and 12-step-based treatments. The patient attributed psychological and spiritual changes to her ketamine treatments, and her ketamine-induced experiences overlapped with the 12 steps. The report details clinical practices for managing the unique risks of ketamine interventions as substance use disorder treatments.
