Cannabis and psychotic illness.

Among hospitalized psychotic patients, those with cannabis-positive urine tests showed different symptoms from drug-free patients only during the first week after admission, specifically altered perception, thought insertion, non-verbal auditory hallucinations, delusions of control, and delusions of grandiose ability. By one month only delayed sleep differed, and by six months no symptom differences remained. The early symptom cluster matches acute cannabis intoxication. Both groups were mostly single, poorly educated, unemployed people with histories of psychotic disorders who received major tranquillisers.
