The case of Tajuddin, a 19th-century patient in the Nagpur mental asylum, illustrates how cultural and religious beliefs can clash with psychiatric diagnosis. Hospital records suggest he was diagnosed with cannabis psychosis after being discharged from the British army for inappropriate behavior. During his stay, he was regarded as a saint with special powers, and today the hospital, staff, and patients continue to honor him. Religious trusts in his name extend to Mecca, with followers including high-ranking officers and Bollywood celebrities. His case highlights the tension between cultural understandings of psychosis and the shifting foundations of psychiatric diagnosis.
