Psychosis Spectrum Symptoms Before and After Adolescent Cannabis Use Initiation.

JAMA psychiatry November 6, 2024 PhD K.JustonOsborne, PhD DeannaM.Barch, PhD JoshuaJ.Jackson et al.

Adolescents who used cannabis reported more psychosis spectrum symptoms and distress from those symptoms than those who never used cannabis, consistent with a shared vulnerability hypothesis. Symptoms and distress also increased in the years leading up to cannabis initiation, supporting a self-medication hypothesis. Evidence for an increase in psychosis symptoms after cannabis initiation was mixed. The findings highlight that shared vulnerability and self-medication effects should be considered when examining links between cannabis use and psychosis risk.
