Suspected Synthetic Cannabinomimetic Intoxication: Case Series and Review.

A retrospective review of 14 emergency department cases of suspected synthetic cannabinomimetic intoxication at a Kentucky medical center found that the most common psychoactive symptom was agitation (42.9%), while the most common physical symptoms were altered level of consciousness (64.3%) and mydriasis (21.4%). Patients had a median age of 25.5 years, and most (64%) were male. Most cases resolved within 24 hours without complication, though 2 patients required hospitalization. The authors conclude that recent legislation has not curbed public health concerns and that education and additional regulation may be needed to counter the false sense of safety associated with these compounds.
