Therapeutic use of psychedelic drugs in depression disorders

A review of recent literature on psychedelic drugs such as LSD for depression finds that data from clinical research show LSD relieves distress concerning death, particularly in terminally ill cancer patients, and helps treat addictions including alcoholism and nicotine. There is more limited data on classic hallucinogens for depression and anxiety disorders. The studies completed to date are not sufficient to establish clinically relevant effects, though outcomes are encouraging and larger, well-designed, placebo-controlled trials are underway or being planned.
