An integrative review examines the use of psychedelics in psychiatry, covering their historical promise in the 1950s–1970s, subsequent decline due to restrictive policies and stigma, and a recent resurgence driven by new research and changing public perceptions. The review discusses mechanisms of action and neuroplasticity induced by psychedelics, integrative therapeutic approaches, and associated risks and ethical challenges. Compared to traditional treatments that are often ineffective or have significant side effects, psychedelics show potential effectiveness for depression, PTSD, and anxiety. The future appears promising, with research advancements and regulatory changes potentially expanding clinical applications.
