Timbre and the "Zone of Entanglement" in Electronic Dance Music

Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture November 24, 2023 Maria Perevedentseva

Timbre in electronic dance music (EDM) functions like a mycelial network, creating a psychedelic and social form of consciousness that entangles listeners in a radically distributed mode of being. Drawing from philosophy, mycology, psychopharmacology, and timbre studies, the article argues that timbre's unbounded ontology and cyclical reuse across EDM history afford experiential access to a "zone of entanglement" where material, cultural, individual, social, spiritual, and fleshly dimensions of listening are folded into a reverberant unity. This entanglement encourages listeners to negotiate the ethics that such interconnection entails, building on established models of EDM's affectivity.
