The way out invisible insurrections and radical imaginaries in the UK underground 1961-1991

A hidden cultural history of experiments to engineer culture to transform humanity is examined through ideas from artistic avant-garde, new social, and religious movements in the UK Underground from 1961 to 1991. Four case studies—the sigma project, London Anti-University, Academy 23, and thee Temple ov Psychick Youth—blurred lines between inner and outer, invisible and material. At their core was an 'action university' aiming to produce new subjectivities and social relations through pooling resources and sharing knowledge, changing the world from the inside out rather than through top-down revolution. The thesis argues these tendencies depend on each other, contributing to discussions of art, media, politics, and radical education today.
