Amanita muscaria and Amanita pantherina poisoning: two syndromes.

Amanita muscaria contains more excitatory ibotenic acid and less depressant muscimol than Amanita pantherina. Patients poisoned by A. muscaria were more often confused (26 out of 32) and agitated (20 out of 32) compared to those poisoned by A. pantherina (8 out of 17 confused, 5 out of 17 agitated). Patients poisoned by A. pantherina were more commonly comatose (5 out of 17) than those poisoned by A. muscaria (2 out of 32). The findings suggest the ibotenic or pantherina-muscaria syndrome may be divided into two subtypes based on the predominant mushroom species.
