What is it Really Like to be a Human? A Holistic-Subjective Response

Pizhūhish/hā-yi Falsafī- Kalāmī June 12, 2026 Siamak Abdollahi, Mansour Nasiri

A precise understanding of human nature requires a subjective and phenomenological perspective. The paper argues that subjectivism must adopt a holistic viewpoint to effectively counter eliminativism, which denies the reality of conscious experience. The authors propose 'Subjective Holism' as a framework, not a definitive solution, that treats humans as integrated complex systems. This approach clarifies how mental and physical states emerge as properties within the system, aligning with the intuition of considering oneself subjectively as a whole. It reframes the question of human nature to how a unified whole possesses qualia like insideness and uniqueness, which are exclusive to the subject's conscious experiences.

Subjective Holism and the Problem of Consciousness.

Pizhūhish/hā-yi Falsafī- Kalāmī December 12, 2024 Siamak Abdollahi, Mansour Nasiri

The explanatory gap in consciousness—how unconscious matter becomes conscious—arises from physicalist and dualist viewpoints. This paper proposes that adopting subjectivism and holism, forming a theory of subjective holism, can either dissolve the problem entirely (maximum answer) or at least point toward the correct way to solve it (minimum answer). The argument suggests that by shifting perspective away from eliminativism and dualism, the hard problem of consciousness need not arise, offering a positive resolution to the mind-body problem.
