Beyond Meditation: Understanding Everyday Mindfulness Practices and Technology Use Among Experienced Practitioners

arXiv Preprint Archive July 14, 2024 Jingjin Li, Karen Anne Cochrane, Gilly Leshed

Experienced mindfulness practitioners use strategies like brief exercises, social accountability, and teacher guidance to sustain long-term practice. They adopt technologies such as mobile apps, wearables, and online sessions for reminders, emotion tracking, and community connection, but also deliberately limit use and repurpose technology as a focus for mindfulness. The findings expand the definition of mindfulness and highlight tensions between supporting short- and long-term practice. Design recommendations include using metaphor, reappropriating non-mindfulness technology, and integrating community support into personal practice.

Meditating in Live Stream: An Autoethnographic and Interview Study to Investigate Motivations, Interactions and Challenges

arXiv Preprint Archive February 21, 2024 Jingjin Li, Jiajing Guo, Gilly Leshed

Live-streamed meditation offers weaker social presence than in-person sessions but helps attendees build a consistent practice routine and connect with other meditators. Teachers use live streams to deliver meditation globally, which also enhances their own practice and brand building. Challenges with live-stream tools were identified from both audience and teacher perspectives, leading to design recommendations to better support mental wellbeing through live meditation.

Co-designing Magic Machines for Everyday Mindfulness with Practitioners

Conference on Designing Interactive Systems July 10, 2023 Jingjin Li, Nayeon Kwon, Huong Pham et al.

Thirty mindfulness practitioners with varying levels of experience participated in nine magic machine workshops to explore and reflect on their personal everyday mindfulness activities. They generated designs that support daily practice, resulting in six categories: everyday objects, physical spaces, wearables, metaphorical art, companions, and toys. The practitioners' thought processes emphasized eliciting and regulating emotion and associating mindfulness with routine daily activities. The findings suggest that individualized mindfulness products and co-design magic machine workshops can help explore practical design spaces for supporting everyday mindfulness beyond formal meditation training.
