Red fly agaric poisoning is rare, but can occur from suicidal ingestion or for psychedelic effects. A young man fell into a coma after eating the mushrooms. Rapid identification of the poison, early gastric lavage, and symptomatic treatment led to symptom regression and hospital discharge on the third day. The authors discuss the poisonous alkaloids ibotenic acid, muscimol, muscasone, and muscarine, and their properties responsible for intoxication symptoms.
