A fatal case of toxic leukoencephalopathy occurred after someone ingested the new psychoactive designer drug 2C-E, also called "Europa." Recreational hallucinogenic drugs are growing in popularity, partly because information and newer designer substances are easily available online without legal consequences. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed selective diffuse toxic injury to the cerebral white matter, while the cortex and most deep gray nuclei were spared. This is the first reported description of MRI findings likely related to a lethal ingestion of 2C-E.
