Ontogeny of N,N-dimethyltryptamine and related indolealkylamine levels in neonatal rats.

In rats of various ages, the hallucinogens DMT and 5-MeO-DMT (called OMB in the paper) were detected in the brain from birth. DMT levels were low initially, rose significantly around days 12 and 17, then returned to low levels. OMB levels were higher and more variable, peaking at days 12, 17, and 31. The related compound THBC was highest at days 22 and 31, while tryptamine was undetectable until day 19. The functions of these compounds in mammalian tissues remain unknown.
