Effects of Mindfulness Meditation on Patient Experience During Urodynamics: A Prospective Study.

International urogynecology journal October 1, 2024 Ruby Kuang, Christina Moldovan, Sydney Drury et al. 5 citations

A randomized controlled trial tested whether a brief mindfulness audio prompt before urodynamics (UDS) reduces anxiety and pain. Sixty patients were assigned to either a mindfulness group or a control group. Both groups completed questionnaires on lower urinary tract symptoms, anxiety, and pain before and after the procedure. After UDS, anxiety scores decreased in both groups, but the mindfulness group reported significantly greater calmness (mean 1.7) compared with the control group (mean 2.3). The mindfulness group also reported increased relaxation, while the control group reported decreased relaxation. Patients without prior UDS experience showed greater improvement in total anxiety. Mindfulness meditation may improve calmness and relaxation during UDS.
