Serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors remain the first-line pharmacologic treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, despite the availability of newer medications with novel mechanisms. Augmentation agents for major depressive disorder now have stronger evidence supporting their use, offering clearer guidance for primary care providers. Data on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for mood and anxiety disorders are not yet robust enough to recommend generalized use.
