A review of 29 studies found that yoga nidra, a guided meditation that does not require physical poses, is effective for conditions such as stress and mental health. The studies included 12 randomized controlled trials, 13 quasi-experimental studies, 3 mixed-methods studies, and 1 qualitative study. Outcomes were grouped into themes: stress, mood, well-being, psychologic dysfunction, biomarkers, sleep, and miscellaneous. However, clinical heterogeneity in sample populations and intervention session lengths, frequencies, and durations made it difficult to draw firm conclusions. More studies with larger samples and stronger designs are needed. Yoga nidra shows potential as a noninvasive, nonpharmacologic treatment or adjunct for mental health and other conditions.
