Ethical principles of traditional Indigenous medicine to guide western psychedelic research and practice.

Lancet regional health. Americas February 1, 2023 Yuria Celidwen, Nicole Redvers, Cicilia Githaiga et al. 126 citations

An Indigenous-led global group of practitioners, activists, scholars, lawyers, and human rights defenders formulated eight interconnected ethical principles—Reverence, Respect, Responsibility, Relevance, Regulation, Reparation, Restoration, and Reconciliation—to guide the use of traditional Indigenous medicines in Western psychedelic research and practice. The consensus process addressed concerns about cultural appropriation, lack of recognition of the sacred cultural positioning of these medicines, exclusionary practices, and patenting of traditional medicines. The work presents suggested ethical actions for moving forward within Western psychedelic research and practice spaces.
