Psychedelic drugs and the law: What’s next?

Knowable Magazine March 14, 2024 Ben Seal 1 citation

Oregon's first psilocybin service center opened in June 2023, allowing adults over 21 to consume the drug in a state-licensed facility, marking a new phase in the psychedelic revival. Psilocybin remains federally illegal as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, which limits research. A 2020 systematic review found psychedelics can lessen symptoms of mental health conditions like PTSD, depression, and addiction, with no serious long-term adverse physical effects reported, though more research is needed. Over 60% of Americans support regulated therapeutic use, and an estimated 5.5 million US adults use psychedelics annually.
