QEEG studies of the acute effects of the visionary tryptamine DMT.

Cosmos and history January 1, 2015 Juan Acosta‐urquidi 15 citations

Inhaled vaporized DMT—both synthetic N,N-DMT and 5-MeO-DMT from toad venom or synthetic sources—produced rapid, profound alterations in consciousness that correlated with measurable changes in brain electrical activity. The most consistent effect was a robust suppression of alpha brain waves, which decreased by an average of 72% during the DMT experience. During recovery, some participants showed an alpha rebound with an average increase of 43%. The study used QEEG recordings from 23 healthy volunteers (15 men, 8 women) aged 25–60, comparing baseline, DMT, and post-recovery conditions. The rapid onset and short duration of DMT effects made this EEG study feasible.
