A Systematic Literature Review of the Potential Therapeutic Effects of Ayahuasca Tea Prepared From the Use of Banisteriopsis Caapi and Psychotria Viridis

Journal of Agricultural Studies December 10, 2020 Adriane Cordeiro Trevisani, João Pedro Cordeiro Trevisani, Moacir Haverroth et al. 1 citation

Ayahuasca, a decoction of Psychotria viridis and Banisteriopsis caapi used in indigenous and religious practices, has been studied over 30 years for therapeutic potential. Most research focuses on neuropsychology, suggesting benefits for neurological and neuromotor disorders. Antimicrobial, antiparasitic, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant actions have also been reported. However, further studies are needed to evaluate efficacy and safety before it can be used as an alternative therapy, particularly among the populations whose traditional knowledge produced it.
