Santo Daime: experimentando um cristianismo xamânico

The article examines how the Santo Daime doctrine, founded by Raimundo Irineu Serra in 1930 in Acre, Brazil, integrates elements of Amazonian shamanism and popular Christianity. The religion uses ayahuasca, a sacred beverage consumed for millennia by indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest to contact the spiritual world and for healing. Santo Daime introduces a new form of consuming the shamanic drink, now guided by Christian ethical and symbolic values, while preserving shamanic experiences such as rites of passage, shamanic flights, and healing. The authors argue that Santo Daime fosters productive dialogues between Christianity and shamanism, and that ayahuasca as an entheogen can serve as a notable element for new theological hermeneutics.
