Ayahuasca, like other medicinal plants, has traditionally been used by Indigenous peoples of South America but is increasingly adopted by non-Indigenous groups with little or no reference to this ancestral use. This article presents accounts of ayahuasca and other medicinal plants used by students from the PET Conexões Saberes Indígenas program at UFSCar, who belong to various Indigenous peoples of Brazil. Special attention is given to ayahuasca among the Tukano, Omágua, and Dessana peoples, as an emblematic example of a globally known drink made from native South American plants that has been appropriated by non-Indigenous groups.
