In hypertensive rats, chronic administration of ayahuasca for 60 days did not significantly alter systolic or diastolic blood pressure, nor did it cause relevant histopathological changes in the liver, kidney, or heart. Some differences in serum markers (SGOT and urea) appeared between rats receiving daily ayahuasca and those receiving daily water, but the overall findings suggest no toxic cardiovascular or major organ effects from the tea. The authors conclude that chronic ayahuasca use in hypertensive rats caused no significant change in blood pressure.
