Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy: A Literature Review

January 1, 2022 Meredith Victoria Welch 1 citation

Current treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remain inadequate, despite the condition's high lifetime prevalence of about 8% in the United States, making it the fifth most common mental disorder. Pharmaceutical advancements have stagnated since the 1980s, leaving a gap in resolving root causes of trauma. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP), drawing on centuries of ritual use, is regaining credibility in Western medicine. A content analysis of PAP suggests a positive correlation between its use and improved mental health outcomes, particularly quality of life, offering a potential shift toward more humane and effective care for trauma.
