Mycochemical screening, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties of Panaeolus cyanescens

Nusantara Bioscience March 28, 2025 Khea V. Galay, Sheila Marie Y. Plimaco

Ethanolic extracts of the hallucinogenic mushroom Panaeolus cyanescens contain a wide spectrum of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, and fatty acids. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry identified 25 unique compounds with antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. The DPPH assay showed strong antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 91.19 ppm, and the brine shrimp lethality test indicated substantial cytotoxicity with an LC50 of 26.63 ppm, suggesting anticancer potential. The findings provide initial scientific validation for the mushroom's historic cultural use and highlight its varied bioactive properties.
