Microdosing involves taking a very low dose of a psychedelic substance without producing cognitive, affective, perceptual, or neurophysiological alterations. Institutions such as MAPS, Johns Hopkins University, Imperial College London, and the FDA have designated microdosing as an 'innovative therapy,' a promising alternative approach for mental health treatment. This review examines studies (double-blind, longitudinal, open-label, randomized controlled trials, mostly with placebos) on microdosing with hallucinogens—LSD, MDMA, or psilocybin—combined with psychotherapeutic techniques as pharmacological supplements for chronic psychopathologies, moderate to severe disorders, and life-threatening illnesses. It covers mechanisms of action, inclusion methodology for research from 2006 to 2021, clinical findings, and a discussion of reported adverse effects.
