The article examines the spread of esoteric Buddhism (Vajrayana) in Russia, including into regions where Buddhism is not traditional. It identifies reasons for growing interest: a search for alternatives to materialism, psychological self-regulation through mindfulness, synthesis with other spiritual practices, and ecological consciousness. Critiques from Orthodox theology are highlighted, noting contradictions in anthropological concepts, risks of spiritual delusion, occult elements such as mantras and visualizations, and incompatibility with the Christian doctrine of salvation. The dangers of syncretism and the substitution of faith are emphasized.
