“Just a Swinging Door” – Examining the Egocentric Misconception of Meditation

Contemplative practices have ancient roots in Western philosophy but are largely absent from modern academic philosophy, which treats knowledge as a purely intellectual pursuit divorced from bodily and holistic training. This creates a blind spot that prevents philosophy from articulating profound pedagogical and moral transformation. Meditation is often dismissed as egoistic and apolitical, a view stemming from liberalist and Cartesian notions of subjectivity prevalent in education. Analyzing a simple breathing exercise can deconstruct these dualisms and open new ways of understanding the relationship between truth and subjectivity in education, with significant socio-political implications for educational theory and practice.
