EKSPLORASI SIMBOL DAN MAKNA DALAM MANTRA PENGOBATAN MASYARAKAT DAYAK SEBERUANG

SeBaSa March 31, 2026 Indriyana Uli

Healing mantras of the Dayak Seberuang community in West Kalimantan encode a cosmological view in which illness arises from disrupted relationships among humans, spirits, and nature. Using Peirce’s semiotic framework, the study classifies eleven mantras’ signs: plants and herbs function as icons, symptoms as indexes, and terms like pederak, sawan, and datai dara/bujaŋ as culturally constructed symbols. Dominant symbols include spirits (antU), the concept of “tawar” marking healing, the color black, sacred numbers, and medicinal plants muŋah and buŋkaŋ. The mantras operate not merely as healing formulas but as a cultural sign system grounded in local wisdom.
