MOLECULES OF CONSCIOUSNESS: THE ROLE OF NEUROTRANSMITTERS IN PSYCHIATRY AND SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

ARMENIAN JOURNAL OF MENTAL HEALTH January 1, 2024 M.g. Yeghiyan, D.a. Palyan

Neurotransmitters, particularly endogenous DMT (dimethyltryptamine), may act as bridges between biological and spiritual dimensions of human experience. DMT, naturally produced in the brain, can induce altered states of awareness linked to profound spiritual and mystical experiences, possibly becoming active during critical life situations to transform perception. Recent research highlights psychedelics' therapeutic potential in psychiatry, especially for depression, PTSD, and addictions. This theoretical article argues that neurotransmitters serve as "divine tools" enabling higher states of consciousness, connecting the biological and spiritual aspects of human existence.
